This format of the 4 x 7 inch canvas is very satisfying to work on right now. It is fun and the pieces are affordable. I am loving working with all kinds of papers–wallpaper, foils, book pages, found papers, etc…I have been using more cutting tools besides the scissors. It is challenging to work in the small area…some of these are definitely blueprints for larger works in the future. These new pieces and larger ones are showing right now at The Tap Room at 2201 Arapahoe in downtown Denver. Go check it out! This place is really cool and the people are too! Great raspberry beer!

I just hung a new show at Pablo’s on 6th and Washington in Denver (thru July). This newest series is such a break from my last work in that the collage pieces were laid down with complete trust–no labored arranging and re-arranging. It feels good to trust my own intuition in creative process and in life in general. Click here to visit the online gallery of new images.

As life unfolds, I see it is true that with radical trust, life reveals itself much more beautifully when I can let go and live free of anxiety and worry. How much control do we really have? What does “take control of your life” mean? I can make choices in my mind and in my daily actions and then the rest is up to life and for me to trust and move. The ultimate trust is that we will live to see another sunrise and another moon and even another full moon. Trust is trust and trust we must. Trust inspiration to show you something about yourself. Trust your strength to change one little thought in the mind to repattern into something more life-affirming. Trust that your life will unfold in a kind way, that reality IS kind and full of possibilities. Trust intuition. Trust connection. Trust love. Trust your Self and get anchored in your life.

And thank you to all who came to my art opening at Metropolis. It was one of the most successful openings I have ever had. And so many friends and wonderful people came by.

I believe that in connecting to artists from the past, through viewing their work or reading their writings, I am fueled in the present. In particular, the late artist Agnes Martin comes to mind. In her book, “Writings,” she touches on something very profound. She writes,

“Say to yourself: I am going to work in order to see myself, to free myself. While working and in the work I must be on alert to see myself. When I see myself in the work I will know that that is the work I am supposed to do.”

As an artist, I feel it is one of the hardest things to write an Artist Statement because the process of following inspiration and the journey of creating and where you end up is such a very abstract experience. I don’t set out to create an exact image from my mind. Instead I experience the “seeing myself” in the work and going from there. When a piece is complete, I step back and see something of myself that had not even existed in real time and space before. I can realize that certain pallettes and shapes and compositions resonate with me and then try to interpret them as a deductive process. The interpretation is a means of communicating something back to myself in words as well as to the viewer of the work.

My collages are taking a new direction–a little looser, a little more daring in the balancing. There are still the elements of “stacking” or “building,” but with more chance for mobility.

commission piece for Sippel family

Here is a photo of the latest commission piece I completed. The piece was inspired by the falling leaves and interior colors of the family’s home. I created the linework while outside, and the whole time tiny yellow leaves were falling all around. The window is from the home of family who commissioned the painting.
